Narrative:
This music video is a 70's styled sepia toned short story that is about a young student who feels out of place at the halls of school, who spends their day, day dreaming about there crush. During the day the student encounters the crush multiple times but never interacts with each other. Throughout the video the main character is just stares willingly until they notice, but when they do she turns away.

Camera:

This music video starts with an opening pan, to show the location. This shot is very clear and eye catching to the audience. Starting of the video with this shot shows the quality of the video, as this shot is seen to be allowing the video to have a strong start to it. Adding on to this the use of the pan shot, is to establish the type of video that has been created, and how the narrative is going to be displayed to the audience in the video.

Another camera technique that has been used in Selena's music video 'Bad Liars' is the use of close up shots. The use of close ups are significant to the character as it allows the use of her face to show her emotions. The emotions that this character is likely to be feeling in this video is heart break and loneliness, as the video presentes her in a way as if she is invisible to her crush. Adding on to this the use of close up also allows the attention and focus to be put on Selena. This is important in a music video, as the artist is typically the main marketing and branding for the music video and is usually the main reason that it attracts such a big audience.

In this music video, the camera is used in a handheld method to show the audience what Selena's character is looking at. The use of handheld allows the audience of the video to feel as if they are in the characters shoes, and can get an understanding for what happens in her life. The use of this camera shot suggests the idea that as Selena walks down the school hallway she is alone, and does not fit in the other groups. The people may not be actually looking at Selena, however this shot shows what she sees, and how everything is viewed.

The next camera technique that is used in this video is the idea of a long take. The long take links to the handheld camera as she is walking down the hallway. The use of the long take links to how Selena's character might be feeling, as it is suggesting the idea that it might feel to her as if she has been walking down their for a while, however in reality is might be a couple of seconds for her to walk down their. Adding this type of shot to the video makes people feel bad for her character, and makes them feel symphothy for her character.

Editing:

In this music video, they use editing throughout the video. One type of editing that is being used is the idea of focus. The focusing throughout the video is only on Selena. The reason that the focus is on her is due to the idea that the purpose of the video is to make her stand out. The reason that the artist needs to stand out is because she has an image to uphold, whereas the other people in the video are just their to allow the narrative to be shown, and to make the video look more realistic. Adding on to this the use of focusing also allows Selena's character to look more as if she is isolated. The isolation comes from the idea that she is too focused on her day dreams and crush to be around other people.

Mise-en-scene:

When looking at a video text, the mise-en-scene is known to be the things that can be seen in the video. This includes ideas such as: Props, Location, Costume and Lighting. The first thing that is noticeable is the props and location. These two different ideas link together and work in unison to make the video feel like it is authentic and realistic, making it look more as if these locations are real. Linking on from this, the video also includes characters of which show different social groups. This links to the idea of social, as they typically have different types of people. From this it brings the attention to Selena's character, allowing her to stand out as she does not fit in with any of the typical groups, she is being herself. Representing her character like this links to her in the real world, showing her audience that she likes to be different and should be someone that they should follow.

Another affect that can be noticed within this video is the idea of the sepia tone on the video. The sepia tone matches the narrative of the video to make it look and feel as if the video was set in the 80's. The use of this effect allows the audience to easily identify the era that this video is aimed to be created in.
